Before the city of Miami was born South East Florida was inhabited by Tequesta Indians. Miami adopted the Miami name from the Mayaimi a Native American tribe that settled near Lake Okeechobee. Julia Tuttle convinced Henry Flagler to expand his railroad to South Florida eventually creating the Florida East Coast Railway shortly after on July 28, 1896 Miami was officially incorporated as a city. In the last decade alone, the city of Miami has undergone “Miami Manhattanization” transforming the overall skyline of downtown Miami to what is now considered one of the largest skylines in the United States.
